GH5 Video Settings: Make Your Panasonic GH5 a Filmmaking Camera

Early reviews are generally positive. That could be changing soon based on my experience the past few weeks with the GH5. This means you can handhold cinema lenses Rokinon, for example and get very good results.

GH5 - lots of grain even at ISO 100

Also, rolling shutter is minimal on the GH5. And, as for the image? Yes, the GH5 has a vast array of options and settings. It can be confusing. Granted, some of these are more helpful than others.

When in doubt you may need to Google a bit, or, better still, tackle the operating manuals at least once.

The GH5 is a mighty little beast. Take your time. After a few days, you should feel more comfortable. Selecting VLog as a picture profile will give you a flat image. This is great for post-production workflow and color grading. Even better, you can activate it in-camera. After following those steps you should see a more contrasty image on the LCD. Note that the recorded image is still unprocessed VLog video. In post-production you can, of course, apply the official LUT. The GH5 is highly customizable.

For instance you can manually define any of the 20 on-camera body buttons including the joystick and rear dial. Each of these modes can be configured however you like. Note there are a few settings that are not customizable to a C button rotate display, profile setup and a few others.

A magnesium alloy full die-cast armor frame makes the body lightweight yet durable while bringing ruggedness to the compact size. This camera can go everywhere you can. The shutter unit is durable for approx. Not only does it offer the highest shutter speed at max.

Together with the removal of the low-pass filter from the sensor, you can confidently capture sharp images with a high dynamic range and artefact free.

The marriage of an advanced Digital Live MOS sensor with the beautiful new Venus Engine 10 produces extraordinary color detail and natural texture expression.

Multipixel Luminance Generation and Intelligent Detail Processing render intense brightness and contrast. Video users will be impressed with the improved performance in perceptual dynamic range at high ISO sensitivity settings. Faster frame rates mean excellent motion compensation plus you can slow down footage inside your video editing timeline without losing detail.

You also achieve perfect panning control and a suppression of the rolling shutter effect as seen in lesser frame rates. High-resolution images and perfect focal length can also be achieved as the LUMIX GH5 features pixel for pixel, no sensor cropping recording.

There's also no recording duration limit so you can go beyond 30 minutes in all record settings. For example, bit will render all the subtleties of graduated skies and sunsets without the banding so prone to 8-bit. The power of having film creation capabilities inside the camera sets a new precedent in guerilla style filmmaking. And you can record bit to SD card whilst simultaneously feeding the live signal thru a full-size HDMI port connected to an external monitor or recorder.

Control zings with rich colors from dark to bright shades and high-precision Multi Process NR makes your images pop even at high ISO sensitivity settings. The VFR lets you record videos with dramatic slow motion or unique quick motion in 4K 60fps max. The Focus Transition function automatically shifts the focus point at a constant speed for precise in-focus to out-focus points - for example background to foreground - to give you an impressive 'rack focus' motion picture effect. So, how do you fight against this fear-driven foe and partake in the adventures of shooting in the depths of darkness?

Videographer Joonas Tahtien explains by breaking down the topic into three key areas: gear selection, basic camera settings, and creative setting adjustments. When it comes to opting for the right gear to shoot in low-light, there are a couple of basic guidelines you should follow. Obviously, you should pick a camera that is synonymous with low-light shooting. Tahtien also recommends shooting with a prime lens and utilizing a Speedboster to increase the amount of light hitting the sensor, thus getting more efficient results.

For instance, make sure to open up your lens aperture as wide as possible and lower your ISO and shutter as low as possible. To start off, use the suggested settings in the screenshot below as a reference and build from there. Furthermore, you could still get creative only by using the available light. A rule Thatien likes to follow on those occasions is taking highlights as a priority while composing his shots.

Another reasonable recommendation is to turn reflections to your advantage. After all, when it comes to shooting in low-light, the more light you get, the better your image will turn out, right? Whatever the case, shooting in darkness has and always will be a challenge for filmmakers.

Works ]. Get Instant Access!Every day, new preview clips pop up online, but none as comprehensive as this one by the team at Camerahoarders. Just by eyeballing their footage and comparing against the GH4, this video suggests that we're looking at between a half-stop and a one-stop improvement in noise control. Expect a comprehensive Fstoppers review once the product is released. Although not uncommon to send out pre-release versions of cameras before release to build hype, it seems that the Panasonic GH5 is capturing the imagination of filmmakers who have been long-term admirers of the GH4, but found its limitations and frustrations in areas such as noise and stabilization.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Panasonic GH5 When Shooting in Low Light

It shoots video in 4K and has a area autofocus, letting you track moving subjects quickly and easily. Weighing a beefy That means the camera is quite sturdy, but also heavy. While we love the crisp images it captures and the connectivity options, we still had a few nitpicks. Low light video is bright, but the picture is a bit grainy. Autofocus is also slow and wanders aimlessly at times and, since this is the heaviest camera on our list, it lost points for portability. The optics are great, as the depth of field is quite deep.

This means objects stay in focus whether close up or at a distance without having to rely on autofocus. The Panasonic G85 performs just as well as the GH5 and is super lightweight and portable. The lenses from the two cameras are interchangeable as well, meaning you can pick up the G85 and upgrade to the GH5 later.

While the G85 has a lot going for it, there are a few trade-offs. Images are less sharp, especially when the camera is in motion, and low light video is more grainy. This compact, all-in-one camera has a lot going for it.

However, in auto mode, especially when you have good light, this camera does quite well. This camera boasts some good specifications. It has a The extended ISO range can help capture shots in very low light. However, video capture is limited to p which is a little weak for this day and age.

And, at just A lot of fuss was made in the filmmaking community with the GH4. I never used one — too bad as it seems that, sort of like the Canon 5D Mark II, would change everything, empowering aspiring filmmakers with a powerful tool at a reasonable price.

But when the GH5 and its gargantuan specs were released bit color! VFR up to fps! And on! And … I knew I wanted to at least give it a shot. Safe to say I will be using the GH5 on a lot of projects moving forward. This to me is ground-breaking. It means I can use high quality cine primes for handheld work, and no longer need to carry around a tripod or some sort of gimbal. Other cameras have IBIS too. A wonderful little thing, albeit with several shortcomings.

Among them is battery life. But the biggest issue I saw was the footage. It was jello like. That you get so much else is icing on the cake. Gushing, again. I know. It may sound pedestrian, but having 2 SD card slots is very welcome. We work hard to capture stuff, right? So it makes sense that we get it backed up so that earth can continue its proper rotation.

In this mode the GH5 simultaneously records video to both card 1 and 2. Peace of mind. Not the sexist thing in the world, but having dual SD card slots should become the norm, especially for pro-level gear.

For me, film is the thing, and anything I can do FilmConvert, Lumetri to make my stuff look less video-ish and more film-ish is a priority. Given what I knew, or thought I knew, about the GH line of cameras, with the MFT Micro Four Thirds sensor and in-camera noise reduction and sharpening, I expected to see an image that was harsh and, for lack of a better word, digital.

Last year I shot a bunch of footage in Sonoma under gorgeous redwood trees. I used a Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera in film mode. But using the GH5 is so convenient, and brings so many benefits ergonomics, long battery life, compact size, aforementioned IBIS that it far outweighs the hassles of the Blackmagic camera.

You can shoot up to fps on the GH5. Back at the edit bay, I found the footage to be, again gushing, gorgeous. Good enough for me, especially since it enabled me to be a stealthy little bugger on Robson Street, shooting stuff without drawing attention.

Easy stuff. But there are some minor niggles. And it blinks too slowly. Hopefully this fix will come in a firmware update Panasonic has several planned that add even more features to the GH5. End of story. AF on those cameras is the best on the market. The GH5? In fact, just go for it.One camera was set to Cinelike D, while the other was shooting 'Like Latest ProRes file imports into PP as an audio only file I give up but thanks for the effort.

While the GH5 is shaping up to be a great camera, I'm more interested in the Whiskey. I'll just stick to the year Hakushu.

Has anyone managed to download it and opened it? I wasn't even able to download, after two hours the downloading was auto interrupted. Don't bother thank you for the effort. Works fine. It is a 7GB file so be patient and get a decent internet connection. Otherwise don't play. Don't hate the player, hate the game :. Really though Panasonic needs to fix skin tones so they look accurate and contrast AF should really be "phased" out and Phase Detect used instead.

I am looking to getting this and coming from using a GH4 for over a year, this does seem quite a bit better. Throw in no autofocus at all in variable frame rate modes, and you have a camera that you're really going to have to love, in order to buy it. Looking good, so far. Very clean! Looks like the CDAF still is hunting backwards and forwards to get correct focus. Things I noted from when I used a demo GH5.

Clean, hardly any visible noise! Can't wait to get my hands on this great machine for this price. Thanks for sharing it! No jitter, look at the comment of Bassman a person with knowledge. And do not forget that our dpreview friends probably did not do much color correction, did not denoise etc. And probably used auto WB difficult to correct later if moving the camera from one light source to another.

Many of the shots were white balanced off a gray card, though the lighting changed several times and we had mixed lighting as well, so it's not perfect. We did very minimal grading in order to show the footage as close to out-of-camera as possible. It must be me then but this looks quite bad. The motion is jerky, the skin colours horrible or does the guide have a pink neck? It's you. The jerkiness is the 24fps format, should have been shot at 30fps.

The guide has pinkish skin compared to the others, stabilization liked fine and the noise is quite good, even at
